Wood infestations and fungal decay can affect any building no matter how old or in what material is is built, if timber decay or infestations are discovered they should be identified and remedial works taken without delay.

Fungal decay occurs in timber when it has become wet for some time and is the result of the attack by one of a number of wood-destroying fungi which attack wood to feed and grow the next generation of spores so is an on going and growing problem which must be dealt with imeediatly. The problem can affects all property’s, historic or modern.  The  lack of ventilation combined with dampness provides the ideal conditions for fungal growth and attack.

Woodworm is a generic term used to describe a number of wood boring insects. Most types of Woodworm can live up to five years and spend all their life eating into wood. Left.untreated, woodworm can seriously effect the fabric of any property, destableising the stucture of the affected property. Woodworm is generally imported into the home in the form of lavea impregnated in wood.

Dry rot and wet rot causes and treatments

Both dry rot and wet rot outbreaks start in similar ways. Mature fruiting bodies of fungi that develop during an attack produce countless microscopic spores and these are dispersed by air movement. When they fall on untreated wet or damp wood they will germinate to form a mass of hyphal threads called mycelium. Mycelium develops inside the timber and breaks down the wood for food. The timber may develop a characteristic cracked appearance and will darken the wood colour. Eventually, the wood loses its structure and strength, in some cases may become unsafe.

The main differences between dry rot and wet rot are the degree of development of mycelium on the wood surface and the ability of the fungus to spread into other timbers via adjacent masonry. It is important that the two types of decay be distinguished since they require different treatment.

Dry rot causes widespread structural damage. Damp Protection Services recommend that an immediate survey is carried out if dry rot is suspected Damp Protection services  undertake wet rot and dry rot treatment in Manchester and all north west areas.

The dry rot fungus is more serious than wet rot and requires fast specialist remedial treatment to avoid serious damage. It’s spores are malignant meaning they can spread and ultiply even through thick walls in search of timber to attack and feed. Timber that is affected by dry rot is brittle, dry and brown and can be crushed and crumbled by hand.

Wet rot  is a common cause of structural defects. This fungus requires a minimum  moisture content of 50 to 60% wet rot does not spread through masonry and growth ceases when the moisture is removed this is a  vulnerable feature of this fungus.  It’s requirement for water!  It is the control and elimination of this essential element that forms the core measure for the elimination control  of dry rot. The first point of attack is the removal of this core element and prevent any further water ingress allthough this action alone will not eliminate all wet rot fungus good drying conditions is essential in the treatment of wet rot..

Both the dry rot and wet rot fungus  have their own unique features, the general appearance of wet rot and dry rot are similar – it is the treatment that varies. With wet rot it is usually confined to the area of dampness because the mycelium does not spread into walls or areas with less than 20% moisture content.

Four most common types of woodworm are…..

House longhorn beetle    Usually found in roof timbers where it attacks softwood timbers this often results in structural weakness

Deathwatch beetle   Found to attack large hardwood timbers such asOak andElm . It  prefers  damp conditions and usually found near some kind of fungal decay or wet rot.

Wood boring weevil    Mainly associated with wet rot timber decay.

Furniture beetle & Wharf borer   The most common of household beetles and responsible for up to 75% of woodworm damage to property in the UK.

It is the presence of new emergence holes and the dust ‘frass’ that falls out of these holes that  indicates the presence of an active infestation of woodworm and boring incects.

Treatment

The first stage before any decision on treatment is considdered is a survey.  Damp Protection Services  consider the type of woodworm infestation, the condition of the infested timber, and the hazards and risks that are associated with any work that is to be recommendedby Damp protection Services.
